What Are The Characteristics Of A Thriller?

Location in a thriller is a vital aspect as it coincides with the twisting plot. Without the typical haunted house, or smoke-filled forest, thriller's therefore would not contain the same dramatic atmosphere.

Thrillers are known for having unraveling plots and complex mind games, hence audiences being so gripped and tense. Plots also tend to be addictive, making the target audience excited to see what happens next.
Many stereotypes are seen in thriller characters, such as: the girl tends to be slightly idiotic, the heroic protagonist tends to be played by a white English or American male, or the sidekick is commonly black.

As well as character stereotypes, thriller's in general tend to have certain expectations. For example, audiences expect to be 'thrilled' and have a large number of violent scenes to watch.

A thriller is a film that has an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage. The aim of a thriller for me is to keep me alert and on the edge of my seat. Some examples of thrillers would be The Great Escape, The Silence of the Lambs and North By Northwest.

There are 6 different type of sub-genre thriller-

An Action thriller uses physical action to create suspense in the film. An example of an action thriller would be Jason Bourne.

A Crime thriller usually includes the aspects of a thriller just with a crime plot. An example of a crime thriller would be The Fugitive.

3) Film-Noir

Film-noir is a term for a distinct, stylistic type of crime-drama or thriller that was popular throughout the 1940s and 1950s. A example of film-noir would be Sunset Boulevard.

4) Psychological thriller

Psychological thriller incorporates elements of drama and mystery film. A example of a psychological thriller would be Taxi Driver.

5) Science Fiction thriller

Science fiction thriller incorporates hypothetical, science-based themes into the plot of the film. An example of science fiction thriller would be District 9.
